Eleanor Encarnacion: "Evolution of Information Exchange," interviewed by Hyun Shon

Throughout the history of our existence, humans have learned through the constant exchange of information among ourselves.  Various methods of communication and recording of information have were exchanged among us, and while time passed on, new ways to make such exchanges have emerged.  Information exchange happens more frequent than ever in the contemporary society, as we are constantly, and unconsciously exposed to the overflowing media around us.  I would like to share with you about how we receive information in today's society through an interview with my friend, Eleanor Encarnacion.

Eleanor and I have been friends since our high school days.  She and I shared a profound interest in art and music, and Eleanor honed her skills in web design and interactive media at the San Francisco Art Institute since graduating from high school.  Now, she works at a renowned magazine company Wired.  Through this interview, Eleanor has granted me a chance to share her experience of working in a publication company, while sharing some of her ideas on the contemporary methods of communication--social networking sites, news, books, newspapers, and television media.

Introduction

Working at Wired Magazine
Wired is a San Francisco based American magazine growing in popularity among the young professional generation.  Since its first publication in 1993, the magazine has been spreading the news of emerging technology and its effects on our society.  In this segment, Eleanor shares about working at this publication company including a brief introduction of the magazine, and her work at the company.

Contemporary Sources of Information
Eleanor and I chatted about the different media from which she and our generation usually gets information from.  During our discussion, we touched on the effectiveness of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) in information exchange, and their defects.  Although it is true that social media is in its own class when it comes to spreading news--making topics viral--it is often overrun by commercials, fake news publications, and click-baits.

Information Through Reading
Books have remained a solid source of information since its existence.  So I asked Eleanor what kind of books she enjoys reading.  While talking about her memorable books, she recounts the assigned summer reading books from our high school days.

Credibility of Current Day Media & Personal Opinions
By the reign of the internet era, and the still-going-strong television media, we are constantly exposed to information about our society.  In this last segment, we chatted about the credibility of current day media, and her personal opinion on Fox News.  During this segment, Eleanor shares her shocking discovery of Fox News publishing incorrect information and not accepting their fault unless caught red-handed;she gives an example from Fox News' coverage of the Baltimore riots and Fox disclosing pictures from Venezuela as a part of the Baltimore riot scenes.  We ended the interview on the question of whether the current young generation is interested in the worldly events around them or not.
